University in a nutshell

Location

Jean Monnet University is located in Saint-Etienne, the only French city designated as a Creative City for Design by UNESCO. With more than 171 000 inhabitants, Saint-Etienne is the 13th most populated city in France.

Saint-Étienne is located less than 1 hour away from Lyon, the capital of the region renowned for its historical and architectural landmarks and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Saint-Étienne is only 2 hours 50 from Paris, 2 hours from the main winter resorts of the Alps and their breathtaking downhill ski slopes. The beaches of Marseille and Montpellier are only 3½ hours away, and the Drôme Provençale, one of the loveliest French regions, a 1 hour 30 drive from Saint-Étienne.

Situated only a stone’s throw from the Pilat Regional Natural Park, the Forez mountains and the gorges of the River Loire, Saint-Etienne is lucky to be close to the countryside and still able to offer everything that can be expected of a major cultural centre.

Transportation

  • From one of the Paris airports: From Paris, you have to take a train at the Gare de Lyon, going to Saint-Etienne.
  • From Lyon Saint-Exupéry airport: Follow the signs at the airport to take the Rhônexpress shuttle to Lyon-Part-Dieu station. Departure every 20 minutes from 5am to midnight. http://www.rhonexpress.fr

 

Train:

  • From Paris Gare de Lyon in 3 hours.
  • From Lyon-Part-Dieu station in 45 min.

Buy a ticket from a self-service machine or from a ticket office. You can also buy your ticket online on www.sncf-connect.com Get off at Saint-Étienne Châteaucreux station.

Bus:

  • From Lyon Saint-Exupéry airport in 40 min. Take a bus from the airport bus station. Remember to book well in advance, as there are only a few journeys available! https://www.blablacar.fr/

By walk, by scooter, by bike, by bus, by tram… the university campuses are all accessible by public transport.

As a student, take advantage of STAS transport in Saint-Etienne Metropole for only 10€ per month. Tickets can be purchased at the machines located at every tram station. A ticket costs 1.60€. Itineraries and hours can be checked on the STAS website: www.reseau-stas.fr/en

Learn French

The International Language and Civilization Center (CILEC) is the school of Jean Monnet University dedicated to teaching French as a Foregn Language (FLE). If you want to improve your level of French and learn more about French culture, their courses are for you!
