From 23 to 27 November 2026, Saint-Étienne will host the Third T4EU Festival of European Culture and Languages, alongside a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) and a T4EU students’ competition, bringing together students and academic staff from across Europe.
A city shaped by migration and industry
Shaped by its strong industrial heritage, Saint-Étienne has long been a city of arrival and movement. Throughout its history, it has attracted diverse populations, contributing to a rich cultural and linguistic landscape.
The festival, dedicated to the theme “Migrations & Heritages,” explores these dynamics through both historical perspectives and contemporary realities. It also places local experiences in dialogue with broader migration trajectories shaping European societies today.
A rich and diverse festival programme
Over five days, participants will be invited to engage in a vibrant programme combining academic, cultural, and artistic activities, including:
Intensive courses for students
- Exhibitions
- Language tasters
- Live shows and film screenings
- Workshops and guided tours
- A Science Café and public discussions
The festival offers a unique opportunity to experience European cultural and linguistic diversity in an immersive and interdisciplinary environment.
Blended Intensive Programme: “Crossing, Arriving, Settling”
As part of the festival, Master’s students will participate in the BIP titled “Crossing, Arriving, Settling: Vulnerability in the Context of Migration, Then and Now.”
This programme combines online learning with five days of onsite teaching delivered by lecturers from diverse academic backgrounds, including political science, anthropology, history, sociolinguistics, and psychiatry.
The course explores migration and vulnerability through an interdisciplinary lens, with a particular focus on reception conditions and lived experiences of migrants across time.
Learning beyond the classroom
Morning sessions will be dedicated to academic teaching, while afternoons will focus on cultural activities and collaborative group work as part of a T4EU Students’ Competition.
Students will work in international teams using archival materials provided by the Municipal Archives of Saint-Étienne, including photographs and videos. Based on these resources, they will design educational materials aimed at engaging wider audiences with migration histories and issues.
The final day will be devoted to the presentation of student projects, followed by an award ceremony for the winning teams.
Upon successful completion of the programme, participants will be awarded 3 ECTS credits.
