Imagining Inclusive Communities in European Culture
Online Seminar with excursion to Paris on January 18 (Saturday)
Given the ethical and political issues raised by transnational migrations and globalization, it is crucial to adopt a critical approach of discourses which shape our representations of collective identities in Western Europe. This course offers a double literary and linguistic approach to imaginaries of community in a broad range of literature, media, and art.
The first two sessions introduce the key concepts of the course (community, identity, migration). The second part of the course proposes an introduction to the media discourse analysis with a focus on linguistic issues of the representation of migrants and hosting communities in everyday and literary language. The third part explores the possibilities of reshaping imaginaries, re-negotiating communal identities and constructing a vision of inclusive communities in contemporary literature and art.
The course will end with an excursion to the Museum of the History of the Immigration in Paris, which will allow us to discuss language of migration and contemporary artists’ works. Students will have the opportunity to present their projects (short essays) prepared during the semester. Students from Transform4Europe partner universities can hand in an addtional written work instead of joining the excursion.
The seminar is organized in cooperation with Dr. Anna Khalonina (Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France, Valenciennes, https://www.uphf.fr/larsh/membres/khalonina_anna).
The course starts on 17th October and consists of 10 online sessions and a daytrip to Paris on 18th January 2025. Online Sessions take place on Thursday, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
