The Critical Heritage Course is the first Transform4Europe (T4EU) e-course bringing together scholars from all 10 partner universities of the Alliance. Available through the T4EU Metacampus, this innovative programme provides a unique opportunity to explore European heritage through interdisciplinary and international perspectives.
The course introduces participants to the concept of critical heritage, examining how heritage is created, interpreted, and negotiated within societies. Drawing on historical and anthropological approaches, it explores European heritage as a shared cultural practice and as a dynamic process of interaction among people, places, objects, and communities.
Delivered by academics from across the Alliance, the course adopts a comparative perspective and encourages students to analyse heritage processes in different cultural and social contexts through case studies and discussion.

Start date: 1 October 2026
Schedule: Every Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Format: Hybrid by design, with every lecture delivered simultaneously in person in Trieste and online via Microsoft Teams, allowing students from across the Transform4Europe Alliance to participate regardless of location.
Credits: 6 ECTS
The course is divided into two modules, focusing on historical and anthropological approaches to heritage studies.
Who Can Apply?
The programme is primarily intended for Master’s students, although third-year Bachelor’s students are also welcome to apply.
Applicants should have a basic familiarity with critical heritage studies. Those wishing to strengthen their background are encouraged to consult Heritage: Critical Approaches by Rodney Harrison (2013).
Interested students are required to submit a motivation letter (maximum one page) outlining their academic background and interest in the course. Letters should be sent to t4eu@units.it.
Assessment
Students will complete the course with an oral examination, including a poster presentation and discussion aimed at assessing the skills acquired during the semester.
The examination will take place online for T4EU students, tentatively in January and February 2027, and will last approximately 25 minutes.
Upon successful completion, students will be awarded 6 ECTS credits.
