T4EU Student Gardens Take Root Across Europe

About

The Transform4Europe Green Campus initiative has established a network of Student Gardens across its partner universities, creating green spaces that promote biodiversity and sustainability. Each university adapted the concept to its local environment and campus needs while incorporating a recognisable T4EU identity through a shared logo element. Led by students from planning to implementation, the gardens reflect the alliance’s commitment to environmental responsibility and community participation.

While each garden is unique, from herb spirals and rooftop gardens to biodiversity spaces and community vegetable plots, they all promote ecological awareness, informal learning, and collaboration. Native and climate-appropriate plant species were chosen to support local biodiversity while ensuring long-term resilience.

The initiative has brought together students, academic staff, sustainability experts, and local partners to transform campuses into living laboratories for environmental education. More than green spaces, the Student Gardens demonstrate how education, sustainability, and community engagement can come together in one place. By designing and creating these shared spaces, students gain hands-on experience while helping shape their campuses. The gardens also provide welcoming environments for learning, relaxation, and social interaction.

Together, the T4EU Student Gardens form a growing network of ecological micro-gardens across Europe, demonstrating how collaborative action can support biodiversity while advancing the alliance’s vision for greener, more sustainable universities. The project also lays the foundation for continued student-led environmental initiatives and long-term cooperation.
