“The Koper Regional Museum is a public institutution founded by the Municipality of Koper. It has public authorization to perform public museum duties. Its main financial sources are state (Ministry of Culture), local (Municipalities of Koper and Ilirska Bistrica), donations and own (offering its venues for rent, sales in the museum shop, marketing events, entrance tickets). The Museum was founded in 1911, a year after the successful exhibition entitled “”The First Istrian Districs Exhibition””, at which the cultural heritage of Istra was presented.
Today, the parent museum building presents an archaeological collection and collections covering the history of culture, art and history of Istra from its very beginnings to the end of the 19th century. In the pavilion along the Museum’s lapidary, a collection of the recent history of the Southern Primorska region is presented, while at Gramsci Square an ethnological collection is on permanent display.
Under the auspices of the Koper Regional Museum, the Prem castle has also been opened.”
