New T4EU podcast episode examines the use of generative AI in translation
About
The latest episode of the Transform4Europe (T4EU) podcast, Reach Out, entitled “Generative AI: Approaches to Translation”, explores the use of generative artificial intelligence in the field of translation, raising a central question: how effective are these tools, and what potential do they hold for transforming translation practices?
Throughout the episode, guests Adrien Bresson, who holds a PhD in Latin Language and Literature from Université Jean Monnet Saint-Étienne, Blandine Demotz, a PhD candidate in English Studies at CY Cergy-Paris Université, and Shannon Bruderer, a research engineer at MSH Lyon Saint-Étienne, share insights from their work on a project dedicated to evaluating generative AI tools for translation purposes.
One of the project’s main objectives is to develop a methodology for assessing the effectiveness of these tools, as well as to establish a typology that identifies and categorises their characteristics according to different uses. The discussion therefore focuses on building a scientific approach that contributes to a better understanding of the role of generative AI in this field.
In its initial phase, the research focuses on a corpus of Latin texts, chosen for its nature as a closed corpus, which facilitates systematic analysis. In the longer term, the project aims to extend this approach to modern languages, enabling a broader application of its findings.
By offering a structured reflection on these issues, the episode invites listeners to reconsider the role of artificial intelligence in translation, highlighting both the challenges and the opportunities it presents for the future of linguistic and academic practices.
