T4EU Science Café and Seminar Highlight Prof. Cipora’s Visit to UP

“Anxious about mathematics? Is that even real?”

About

The University of Primorska (UP) recently hosted Assoc. Prof. Krzysztof Cipora from Jagiellonian University in Krakow within the T4EU Visiting Professorship Programme. During his visit, he took part in a T4EU science café at UP FAMNIT titled “Anxious about mathematics? Is that even real?”, where he presented the phenomenon of mathematical anxiety and its impact on learning, performance and career choices, engaging students and the wider public in discussion.

In addition, Prof. Cipora delivered a seminar on inter- and intra-individual variability in numerical cognition, challenging common assumptions in cognitive psychology about the universality of group-level effects. His research shows that widely observed phenomena – such as the SNARC effect – may be driven by only a subset of individuals and can vary significantly within the same person over time.

The visit forms part of the T4EU Visiting Professorship Programme, which promotes knowledge exchange, interdisciplinary collaboration and joint responses to key societal challenges across Europe.
