About
Universidade Católica Portuguesa, in cooperation with Transform4Europe, organises two Service-Learning Workshops with specialist Berta Paz, on 30 January. Designed to train professors from the Alliance’s partner universities in the implementation of the Service-Learning methodology, the hybrid workshops cover both the foundations and the Transdisciplinary Impact of this methodology.
‘Service-Learning Foundations: Understanding the Pedagogy and How to Begin Implementing It,’ takes place on 30 January, from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., at Católica. It focuses on the essential foundations of Service-Learning for higher education, exploring the definition, origins, and pedagogical principles of the methodology, distinguishing it from volunteering and other experiential methodologies.
The programme includes core components of Service-Learning projects, such as reciprocity, community engagement, reflection, and social impact.
The hybrid session will also introduce participants to the the full SL cycle— needs assessment, partnership building, project design, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination— supported by real examples from European universities.
On the same day, the second hybrid workshop ‘Reimagining Teaching Across Disciplines Through Service-Learning: Transdisciplinary Impact & Eco-Social Engagement’ will take place at Católica, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The session with Berta Paz highlights the diverse possibilities of Service-Learning in disciplines where it is not traditionally prioritized, such as Economics, Business Management, Marketing, Law, and the Arts.
Through a selection of real project examples, participants will explore the transdisciplinary and multi-level potential of Service-Learning to connect academic knowledge with authentic community challenges.
It will also explore how the methodology can strengthen civic engagement, social responsibility, and eco-social entrepreneurship, while also enriching disciplinary identity and innovation.
Transform4Europe’s member universities academic staff and researchers may sign up and join online or in-person.
