About

On 10 September 2024, the first Bootcamp organized by T4EU was officially launched in the city of Burgas. This initiative is part of the T4EU Transformation Laboratory, aimed at engaging young researchers and graduate students in the Alliance’s outreach, stimulating interdisciplinary research, and fostering collaboration with key stakeholders. The event’s thematic focus is on sustainable development and environmental transformation, emphasizing effective climate adaptation and innovations.

The Vice-Rector of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski,” Professor Madlen Danova, welcomed students and researchers from eight European universities that, together with the University of Sofia, are at the core of the T4EU Alliance. The Bootcamp commenced with a workshop held by Associate Professor Stelian Dimitrov, who discussed climate change and the effective adaptation of urban environments. This was followed by a demonstration of advanced data collection tools, including a drone equipped with a LiDAR sensor, presented by the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” team. Students were also briefed on the biodiversity challenges in the region of Burgas through a dedicated lecture, giving them insight into both current and historical environmental issues and potential solutions.

During the first day, students visited the protected area “Poda” an important bird protection site where experiences in managing and maintaining the habitats and developing the space were shared. The area is popular among tourists who come to observe the bounty of bird species. Students engaged with these real-world challenges and learned about the efforts needed to sustain the rich diversity of this tiny westernmost spot of the Black Sea.

A subsequent demonstration showcased another modern method of data collection using a tool called GeoSLAM, which took place at the Sea Port Burgas. The first day of the Bootcamp concluded with a visit to Atanasovsko Lake, where students learned about a range of achievements but also challenges, including land management, suggesting alternative financial models, and the involvement of local businesses.

The second day commenced with a workshop on entrepreneurship, led by Associate Professors Stéphane Foliard and Sandrine Le Pontois from Jean Monet University in France, where students were encouraged to develop their business ideas and collaborate with their peers. Following the workshop, the students were divided into groups to work on a case study centered around the former city department store, “The Hole”. The task aims to engage students in developing a conceptual plan to transform this derelict urban area in Burgas into a sustainable space. The students joined their knowledge on adapting the site to climate change and enhancing urban sustainability through innovative, nature-based solutions.

On the third day, students continued working on their project ideas, refining their plans for the transformation of “The Hole”. At the end, each group will present their proposals to a jury of experts. The most valuable and innovative ideas will be shared with the people and municipality of Burgas, which is a lasting partner and stakeholder of Sofia University in the T4EU project and other joint activities
