About
On July 2, 2025, students from the Faculty of Geology and Geography at Sofia University, that participated in the T-Lab Fair and second Stakeholder challenge of the Transform4Europe Alliance met with the Mayor of Sofia city, Mr. Vasil Terziev and the Deputy Mayor responsible for the “Green System, Ecology and Land Use” department, Ms. Nadezhda Bobcheva. The meeting was also attended by Assoc. Prof. Stelian Dimitrov, institutional coordinator of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” for the Alliance “Transformation for Europe (Transform4Europe)” and head of the National Center for Geospatial Research and Technologies.
During the meeting, which lasted more than an hour, the results and innovative student projects developed during the Transformational Laboratories (T-Lab) event held in early June and the second stakeholder challenge on “Climate Change and European Cities – the adaptation of cities to climate change and the urban heat island effect through the application of nature-based solutions” were presented.
The latest research results and information about the Lyulin district aroused great interest among the representatives of the Sofia Municipality. Collecting data by using one of the most modern geospatial technologies available today, the analyses clearly show the effects and problems associated with the so-called urban heat island in Sofia’s largest district. Some of the solutions proposed by the students include modern, innovative technologies for the construction of green roof spaces, rainwater harvesting and use, the construction of sustainable green infrastructure, etc. In the discussion that followed, the solutions proposed by the interdisciplinary teams of students from the alliance’s partner universities, various aspects of the projects related to their implementation, socio-economic parameters, and financing were discussed.
At the end of the meeting, Mr. Terziev expressed his desire for such meetings to become a regular practice and wished the students success in their professional careers.
