Psychology

In this course students are introduced to key psychological principles behind formation and change of human behavior. The main facts and laws of psychology are presented in a way to enable students to understand the impact of psychological factors on human behavior in various practical situations. Students are taught to interpret psychological experience from various perspectives. For this purpose, classical schools of psychology – psychoanalysis, humanism, behaviorism, and cognitive psychology – are introduced.

Qualitative Methods in Social Science

This course provides an introduction to key topics of qualitative research methods in sociology. Main goal is to introduce students to the main qualitative data collection and analysis techniques. Students will be aware of gathering, analyzing and interpreting social information. This course introduces central concepts of qualitative social research: aims and place in social knowledge; differences of theoretical and methodological basis; triangulation; role of “field work”. The course proceeds with introduction to various research methods: ethnographic; biographical; participant observation; qualitative interview (types, role of interviewer); group interview; case study method. As well students will be introduced to qualitative data analysis. During the course ethical issues will be discussed in qualitative research.

Contemporary Sociology of Religion

The course focuses on religion as a social institution and its expression and development in contemporary society. It discusses the issue of the definition of religion, the distinction between religiosity and spirituality, the phenomenon of non-belief and atheism, religious diversity and fundamentalism. It also analyzes the interaction of religion with other public institutions such as politics, law, gender and family, education and science, medicine and ecology, media, etc. Strategies and opportunities of empirical research of religion, ethical problems, differences of insider/outsider perspectives will also be discussed during the course. After the course students will be able to understand the trends and tendencies of religious change in contemporary society and to critically evaluate the manifestations of religion and their transformations. Students will learn to prepare and conduct the empirical research of religion, communicate with the representatives of various religious communities and understand their perspectives as well as prepare research and applied social projects aimed at addressing emerging issues of religious diversity.

Sociology and Anthropology of Gender

The course will explore the central historical and contemporary debates in the sociology and anthropology of gender, including the search for universal principles underlying the male dominance; relationship between gender, sex and sexuality; how gender articulates with other forms of difference such as race, class and nation; gendered perspectives on power; the interaction of agency and structure in the production of femininities and masculinities; issues of cultural representation and expression; gender and body politics across a range of cultural, historical and institutional contexts; gender and the state and gendered modernity.

Sociology of Civil Society

This e-learning course is one of the deliverables of the CINEFOGO Network of Excellence. The objectives of this course are related to the goals of the Network, which aims “to promote citizens’ involvement and social participation in European policy making – to enlarge and activate democracy and participation”. The course aims to develop civic attitudes – social responsibility, trust and “can do” attitude, which are important components of a viable civil society, develop skills related to working effectively in and for the community, ability to analyze and solve problems of the NGO; provide with the knowledge on civil society, its organization and interactions with the state, which would form the background for informed and well-considered practical action and planning for it.
